WHAT IS IT? Batting Average is a stat the represents the percentage of times a hitter successfully gets a hit when they are at bat.
HOW IS IT CALCULATED? It is determined by dividing the number of hits a player gets by the number of at bats they have.
(Hits)/(At Bats) = Batting Average
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
It is important because it shows a player's ability to successfully get a hit and safely reach base when they are at bat, which is a major component to any successful offense.
The more a player can get hits and get on base, the more likely their team is to score runs.
TIPS TO IMPROVE One major factor in having a good batting average is your hand-eye coordination. Being able to see the baseball and react quickly can set hitters apart.
An easy way for anyone to sharpen hand-eye coordination is playing catch. Either inidividually against a bounce-back net or with a partner, practice throwing and catching a ball. You can make it more challenging by using different hands, throwing from different angles, or using different balls.
