Preseason Fielding Workout Week 6 From Nick Beckmann
Coaches—you’ve probably noticed there’s a problem with young infielders: they don’t use their bodies when they throw the ball, and are slower and less accurate than more seasoned players. Many errors at the youth (and even high school) level occur during the throwing phase, so we designed this drill to rectify that problem.
Fielders—two things to focus on when performing the drill are staying low, and proper foot placement. After fielding the ball, drive with your back hip towards the target. Don’t stand up! Keep the front knee bent, and transition into a crow-hop, gaining ground and momentum. One pro whose fielding technique exemplified all of these points was Derek Jeter.
The benefit of doing this with a partner is that it allows the players to get lots of reps in a short period of time. In addition, this drill can be done in a relatively small area.
